For Undocumented, DACAmented, and TPS Students
Although we cannot speak for all undocumented students and first-generation college students and their journeys through higher education, we can share resources on navigating higher education.
Below are some tips, tools, and other things that will help you pursue higher education. If you need additional assistance or guidance reach out to an organizer at yesorganizer@vdlf.org
Check out the financial aid and loans page and the scholarship page for more on financial assistance.
Good grades
Academic scholarships are often, if not always, the biggest scholarships in terms of funds. Private colleges award different types of scholarships based on your GPA and ACT score. Not having the best grades doesn't disqualify you from financial aid, most colleges are developing systems to evaluate student potential beyond grades. If your grades aren't the best, don't worry! Make sure to still apply to any opportunities that come your way.
Community Involvement
Scholarship and grant providers like to see students that are invested in improving their communities. Whether it's volunteering at a pet shelter, community advocacy, or organizing fundraisers for local non-profits, funders value students that are involved in their communities. Need volunteering opportunities, check out Volunteer Match.
Support System
Surround yourself with people who love you, support you, and are always willing to listen to you. Whether it’s coming from a partner, friend, parent, educator, or mentor, emotional support is crucial to your well-being.
Self-Care
Even the strongest people need self-care. Whether it’s fitness, music, or spending quality time with your loved ones, do things that make you happy.
Fight for your Future
DACA was accomplished because of the Immigrant Youth Movement and it took a lot of work, sacrifice, and passion! Get involved with an organization and continue to advocate for yourself and your community.
Things to Remember
No matter what path you choose remember that it is your own and no one else's. Always do what is best for you and don't forget that you are not alone. If you need help with a resume or essay reviews reach out to us at yesorganizer@vdlf.org
